MAKING MUSIC
Library publishing programs are responsive to their communities and support a broad range of disciplinary areas. This category highlights one discipline that is flourishing through library publishing: music.
These three initiatives broaden the ways music OER can respond to community needs. PALNI’s Brass Techniques and Pedagogy (2nd edition) is a popular, author-led, iterative project. Michigan Publishing Services’s Black Music, in Theory by Philip Newell and Marisa Mercurio offers a space for thoughtful scholarship on Black music to incubate and flourish. Their topnotch pieces treat Black music and musical genres with the dignity, humanity, and care that they deserve. Edinburgh Diamond’s Fundamentals of Music Theory presents educational materials on the building blocks of musical stave notation, a language in use globally and designed to communicate about musical ideas. With these exemplary library publishing efforts, we showcase library publishing that responds to the community to make music.
