PUBLICATIONS AND PROGRAMS / COST SAVINGS
Library publishing allows for cost savings through diamond open access, or publications that are free for both authors and readers. This category highlights specific publications or the programs that allow them to flourish.
These five programs and publications demonstrate the breadth of what diamond open access publishing can look like in practice. UB ScholarWorks at the University at Buffalo Libraries and Indiana University Bloomington Libraries Publishing both build infrastructure that removes financial barriers for authors and readers alike, while the MT Open Press at Middle Tennessee State University extends that model to include creative and scholarly works from its region. At the journal level, Αρετή (Arete) Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership, hosted at PALNI, exemplifies diamond OA in action — a peer-reviewed, no-fee publication fostering interdisciplinary global scholarship. And in the space where open access meets the humanities, UB ScholarWorks’s new translation of Euripides’ Alcestis shows that diamond publishing can breathe life into literary and classical works as much as academic research. Together, these entries make the case that when publishing is designed around access rather than profit, scholarship flourishes across disciplines, institutions, and forms.
